The email read around the world

Forgive me if I appear a little daft, but I don't really understand the fuss surrounding Dianna Abdala's email message.

In a nutshell, William A. Korman, a Boston attorney, offered Abdala a job at his firm. She accepted, but later reneged, spawning the spat of sorts below that was soon to be read all over the world (literally)...including ABC News, the Associated Press and AOL.com...

Dear Attorney Korman,

At this time, I am writing to inform you that I will not be accepting your offer.

After careful consideration, I have come to the conclusion that the pay you are offering would neither fulfill me nor support the lifestyle I am living in light of the work I would be doing for you. I have decided instead to work for myself, and reap 100% of the benefits that I sew [sic].
Thank you for the interviews.

Dianna L. Abdala, Esq.

Dianna -

Given that you had two interviews, were offered and accepted the job (indeed, you had a definite start date), I am surprised that you chose an e-mail and a 9:30 PM voicemail message to convey this information to me. It smacks of immaturity and is quite unprofessional. Indeed, I did rely upon your acceptance by ordering stationery and business cards with your name, reformatting a computer and setting up both internal and external e-mails for you here at the office. While I do not quarrel with your reasoning, I am extremely disappointed in the way this played out. I sincerely wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.

- Will Korman

A real lawyer would have put the contract into writing and not exercised any such reliance until he did so.

Again, thank you.

Thank you for the refresher course on contracts. This is not a bar exam question. You need to realize that this is a very small legal community, especially the criminal defense bar. Do you really want to start pissing off more experienced lawyers at this early stage of your career?

bla bla bla

Okay, so perhaps it is a little sass-mouth, but I do not feel it was cyberspace worthy. I mean, c'mon, are people really that fargan bored?!?! The MP3 of R-Kel pissing on somebody earned its proverbial e-passport hands down, but this crap didn't. Judging by girly's last name (and the fact that she got that super ghettois double "n" than going on in the first), Miss Dianna Abdala is obviously not white. Mr. Korman, however, is. Could this be the reason this exchange made it 'round the globe? If not, perhaps the races of said perpetrators can explain some of the hella ignant comments left on aol.com's message boards...

She's an idiot and she is lucky America let her become a lawyer. That's right. I said it. She should be kissing the ground my forefathers have made for her spoiled self to even become a lawyer. Obviously, she's immature and I hope she no one ever hires her as their attorney.

Um, yeah, right anonymous comment-leaving b!tch. Last time I checked, we live in America where people can attend classes and become whatever the farg they want to be. Nobody told you Walmart was the only option!

OKAY. Now, I have to leave this mess alone, as I'm beginning to actually care that people care about this crap. However, this IS a blog site dedicated to the workplace, soooo, what the f%ck...

Whadaya think? Dianna Abdula: GROW UP!, GANGSTA! or GO HEAD, GIRL!

I say: GROW UP!

Mornin CG!

Ms. Abdula needs to grow up. But like you said, the email is not worth further discussion or analysis.

Morning SM! I just didn't understand all the hoopla. She's just a smart-mouth kid. However, I did come across several comments on how her poor attitude captures that of the entire Gen Y set. Apparently, they have this hefty sense of self-enttitlement going on...

Oh hell yea she needs to GROW UP most definitely! For starters she is a LAWYER, so she should be familiar with corporate "politicing" & know there is protocal in corporate america (at least those who want to succeed while working for "the man"). And primarily because she is NOT white, she really needs to adhere by them unless she plans on opening up her own lawfirm right now and since I'm under the impression she is just beginning her career that doesn't even sound like an option! Even then..she still will need important connections....

I am sure what happened between her and the firm happenes more frequently than you think, but it is the way it was handled by email/voicemail that is quite disgusting. And then the blah-blah-blah comment just totaly pushed it into the "point-of-no-return" zone.

This world is smaller than you think --and when you start breaking it down into career fields, then by race, etc it gets EVEN smaller. Even if this didn't reach global revelation, I am sure lawyers far & near would have known about it because I know I would be the first one telling my colleague about this know-it-all chick. And because it did reach gloal proportion, this is just proof of the major connections and for lack of words shall I say "power" some lawyers have.

Maybe she has a "mummy & daddy" who will continue to support her lifestyle cause Lord knows I dont know who will hire her after this!
She officially gets my "Idiot of the Month" award. CONGRATS DIANNA !!!

LOL...OMGosh! It's so true. Apparently, she plans on stepping out on her own. Still, Boston is SO small. BTW, not trying to be funny, but she didn't even graduate from Harvard!>!>! Usually, they're real big smart a$$es like so. BTW, girly is a trust-fund baby, so I guess she feels set.

LOL...she just keeps getting more names!!! I'm picking her diva behind up tonight! Pray for me, ya'll!

I'll take headshots as soon as a flash and one-foot distance no longers poses a serious threat (to me)! LOL

I did look at Sassy before! But she wasn't all accessorized then...so stop trippin'. If anybody knows anything about me, it's that I love me some furry things (pets) and pretty things (acceossories!)...

She either screwed herself over or made Korman look like a jerk for even responding. If he has been around for so long why didn't he take the higher road and shut her down quietly?

Who's the bigger jerk?

Cocoa Girl said...

I agree with you, dal. He threatened her and she responded. Nuff said.

I vote for grow up. She should have called and/or written a letter to resign from the job she never actually started. And that "bla, bla. bla" comment — whoa! my mouth fell open. But yeah, I'm thinking about dal's comment: why didn't he just say thanks for letting us know and then spread word about her actions in the legal community; as his comments say he will do anyway. Maybe they had something vested in her like an affirmative action/diversity quota.

Cocoa Girl said...

Thanks Anon...I just think it was major ego...on both of their parts. She seems arrogant as all get out and he seems offended but perhaps for the wrong reason.

It sounds like a simple case of needing therapy and fear of success!

There's nothing wrong with changing your mind, it's simply how you do it.

I'd had to unceremoniously turn down/leave a job and my exit might not have been much better than that, however I was much younger and less mature. I don't think I would repeat that again...unless it was a job offer in the high six figures:-)

Dianna Abdala is Caucasian. So that closes that chapter. Also, Korman changed the salary he was offering from the first interview to the second. Who's the one who reneged here? Get your facts straight people before you mouth off next time.

Good for her, so what if she didn't want the job and so what about he emails. Like it was stated before, why did he change his mind on the salary? I've heard he's misrepresented a few in his time.
