It's Career Day @ CGOTJ!

Since I spend so much time beyotching about the workplace, careers and other B.S. (apologies for being triply-redundant), I thought it would be cool to learn more about YOUs and what you do.

Yet, of course, in true O.C. fashion, this spoiled batch of greatness could never survive everyone else sharing their cool stuff sans my seventy-five cents...

1. School?
Yes, The 'Cuse (hated it!) and UMCP (loved it!); Journalism major - Public Relations focus

2. Is that degree earning its keep?
Uh, kinda sorta. I worked in PR and am now writing... I can promote (read whore) the hell out of anything, including mahself!

3. What's my current job & industry?
Trading floor assistant/finance

4. How much longer do I plan to stay?
In this position? 4-8 months... If I hear 'that's really great, Cocoa, you rock!' over a successfully delivered officedepot.com order ONE MORE TIME, I am going to snap! At the firm? I dunno...there's a lot of money here...

5. What was my last job and why did I leave?
Public Relations AE. I wanted to write and publish a book and the crazy schedule just wouldn't allow it. I also was tired of the anti-black air of the 97-percent white industry. Oh, I also didn't want to work with 85.5 percent women (those killa-Beckies were the absolute worst!)

6. What's my dream job & am I there yet?
Weekly newspaper columnist and broadcast commentator, allowed to say whatever the f$ck I want...just so long as it's witty, honest, irreverent and non-racist and non-religiously offensive ('cept, scientology is NON exempt)... I'm getting there...

7. The longest time I've spent at one job...the shortest?
16 mos/3 mos (no, it's not a typo!)

8. How many employers have you had?
4 in 5 years (hey - abandon judgement!)

9. Have you ever been fired?
Um... I'd have to direct you here

YOUR TURN...

CG./R.

Cocoa I have a question as a fellow African-American woman in the coroporate world do you find that Asians and Indians rarely speak. I have found this to be very profound. I tend to think in their attempt to assimilate into White America, ignoring Blacks would make them identify with their white collegues. Also have you found White women to be extremely extremely catty when you are an attractive sister?

Cocoa Girl said...

Temp W - Indians do hardly speak, but I think it has something to do with their culture from back home. Americans are very chatty at work, whereas other societies just don't get down like that. Sort of like, they go to work to work.

Regarding their attempts to assimilate, I really don't think they have to try too hard. It is harder for certain Asians (both 'Asians' and Indians are 'Asian') than others (e.g. those with thick accents or darker complexions or brand-new work visas) to fit in with American whites. However, when dealing with matters of assimilation, I think it will always be difficult for blacks and hispanics. I've never really felt Asians ignore me at work, but I do have black friends who have felt this way.

Lastly, I do not know if I would some up the attack behavior of many white women on the job as catty...it's so much more than that. Granted, my experience is very limited being that I worked in one industry. Yet, I will say that I think much of the hatred we experience by way of white women on the job is due to their intimidation and the overall competitive nature of work.

P.R. was hella cut-throat and so the girls used any angle they could to tear someone down. Unfortuantely for me, my race (known to some as an automatic problem) made me an easier target. Everything came down to perception and who liked whom and who fit in best. When you're black and from the Midwest and divalicious and your cubemate is Jewish, unexposed and from the UWS and equally (or less)-divalicious, shyt is going to hit the fan.

Just my two cents...now answer the questions:)

4. Fo' Life?

5. Man, I worked for this AIDS foundraising company and I got hella tired of being the straight black dude there. It was draining me. I couldn't hold it down by myself anymore. It was a bunch of corny white girls with better positions than me and an array of gay men. I had to bounce. I couldn't do it. The pin-ups killed me. The screen savers blinded me. The velvet choker...

*Dude, your wearing a velvet choker. Ain't no way I can listen to you right now. And yo' Black ass has bleach blonde hair and your wearing blue contacts? Nigga Pleeze...

1. School?
Yes, I go to NYU.

2. Is that degree earning its keep?
Almost! I'm 44 credits away from my BA in Creative Writing. I'm not a typical student though - I worked in magazines for 15 years at magazines including Woman's Day and GQ, where I was an Assistant Editor. 3. What's my current job & industry?

5. What was my last job and why did I leave?

Looking at only full-time jobs I've had: Three years and 4 months, respectively.

8. How many employers have you had?
A million and one if you count temping. Three full-time.

9. Have you ever been fired?

Yep. I was fired from Sam Goody back in the day. It was my 2nd job to supplement my meager editorial assistant salary. I went to visit friends one weekend and blew off work and the manager told me not to bother coming in the next week. I wasn't exactly crushed.
